“Grilled Cheese and Milk” Cake

April Fool’s Day is coming up, and what better way to trick someone than with delicious food? This dish looks like a grilled cheese sandwich and milk, but it’s actually a citrus pound cake filled with orange butter cream, and a lovely milk glaze! Serve this to your friends when they come over for tea and coffee, and I’m sure that they’ll be happily surprised!

Ingredients (makes 4 sandwiches)
❤ 1 loaf citrus pound cake (recipe below)
❤ orange buttercream (recipe below)
❤ 1 cup confectioner’s sugar
❤ 4 tbsp milk

1. Mix together the confectioner’s sugar and milk to make the “milk”. Set aside.
2. Once the pound cake has fully cooled, slice the pound cake into bread-like slices, and toast in the toaster until golden brown. To prevent the cake from crumbling too much, slice the “bread” in half before spreading with the buttercream. Then allow the slices to cool once again.
3. Spread the buttercream over the toasted bread to look like cheese, and then top with another slice of bread to make a sandwich.
4. To serve, place the sandwich on a plate, then pour the “milk” into a milk jug, or milk glasses. Pour the milk over the sandwich as a glaze serving.

Citrus Pound Cake (makes 2 loaves – I only used 1 in the recipe)
❤ 3 cups flour
❤ ¼ tsp baking soda
❤ a pinch of salt
❤ 1 cup butter, softened to room temperature
❤ 3 cups sugar
❤ 6 eggs, separated
❤ zest of 2 oranges
❤ 1 tsp vanilla extract
❤ 1 tsp lemon extract
❤ 1 cup sour cream

1. Sift the flour, salt and baking soda together.
2. In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar until white and fluffy.
3. Add egg yolks one at a time, beat well after each addition. Stir in orange zest, vanilla and lemon extract.
4. Add flour mixture and sour cream alternatively, beating until well blended.
5. Beat egg whites until stiff, and fold into batter.
6. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9″ x 5″ loaf pans, and bake at 350F for 40 minutes.
7. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack and cool completely.

Orange Buttercream (makes 3 cups)
❤ ½ cup butter, softened to room temperature
❤ 4 ½ cups confectioner’s sugar
❤ 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
❤ 5 tbsp orange juice
❤ orange extract, to taste (optional)
❤ orange food colouring

1. Beat the butter with a whisk until creamy. Add the confectioner’s sugar, and mix together.
2. Add the vanilla extract, orange juice, and if using, orange extract, and mix together. Dye the buttercream an orange cheddar-cheese colour, and set aside.

❤粉糖 1カップ
❤牛乳 大さじ4

①粉糖と牛乳を混ぜあわせ、 「牛乳」を作って置く。

❤小麦粉 3カップ
❤重曹 小さじ1/4
❤塩 ひとつまみ
❤バター(室温に戻した) 1カップ
❤小麦粉 3カップ
❤卵(卵黄と卵白が分けた) 6個
❤オレンジピール(みじん切り) 2個分
❤バニラエッセンス 小さじ1
❤レモンエッセンス 小さじ1
❤サワークリーム 1カップ


❤バター(室温に戻した) 1/2カップ
❤粉糖 41/2カップ
❤バニラエッセンス 小さじ1 1/2
❤オレンジジュース 大さじ5
❤オレンジエッセンス(お好みで) 適量
