Cheese and Crudites Cottage |

Cheese & Crudites Cottage |

This cottage is the perfect way to glam up a traditional cheese and crudités platter, and create a centerpiece that all of your guests will remember. The video provides a great visual tutorial, while the typed recipe will give you more specific directions. It may look slightly messy when building the individual pieces, but the finished cottage is both refined and rustic.
I made this for my parents when they came over to my apartment, and it was demolished within the hour. Cute and also delicious – the perfect combination!

Ingredients

❤ 22 Ryvita crackers, any flavour
❤ 3 soda crackers, or any small, square crackers
❤ 1 ½ – 2 ½ cups cheddar cheese, shredded
❤1 small bun
❤ assorted fruit (pear, red grapes, dried apricot, etc)
❤ assorted nuts (almonds, pistachios, walnuts, etc)
❤ crudités (celery, carrots, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, etc)
❤ 3 varieties of cheese (blue cheese, parmesan, brie, etc)
❤ desired dip, relish or spread
❤ wooden cutting board

Directions

《Foundation and Walls》

1. Place the short ends of two Ryvita crackers side by side, and sprinkle about half a handful of cheese across the seam of the two crackers. Place in the microwave on a flat, microwave safe tray, for 5 – 10 seconds, until the cheese is gooey and bubbling. Place a third biscuit on top of the cheese and the seam of the two crackers. Place in the fridge until the cheese has cooled and set. Repeat to make a second wall of the cottage.
2. Sprinkle half a handful of cheese onto both short ends of one Ryvita cracker. Microwave for 5-10 seconds until the cheese is gooey and bubbling. Attach one short end of each wall from step one onto each cheese-covered end, leaving about a 1 cm “lip” on each end of the cracker. Face the sides of the walls with the third supporting cracker inwards, towards the inside of the cottage. This will create a “U” shape. Hold onto the two longer walls until the cheese begins to set and cool, about 4 minutes, and the foundation is able to stand up on its own in its finished position. Place in the fridge and allow the cheese to fully set, about 5-10 minutes.
3. Once the three walls are set, sprinkle the short ends of another Ryvita cracker with cheese, and melt in the microwave for 5-10 seconds. Remove from the microwave, and attach the cracker directly onto the remaining short edges of the longer walls, maintaining a 1 cm “lip” on each side of the shorter wall. This will create a rectangular-shaped box. Hold the cracker in place until the cheese slightly sets and then place in the fridge for the cheese to fully set.

《Roof》

1. Place the two long sides of two Ryvita crackers side by side, and sprinkle about half a handful of cheese across the seam. Repeat this with another two crackers, and melt the cheese in the microwave for 5-10 seconds, until the cheese is gooey and bubbling. Place another cracker on top of the bubbling cheese, but in the opposite direction of the two bottom crackers, so that it is forming a slight bridge. Repeat for the other set of two crackers. Place these in the fridge to set.
2. Place another two Ryvita crackers side by side, with the long sides almost touching, with about a ½ cm gap. Sprinkle a liberal amount of cheese on top of this gap and edge of the crackers. Also sprinkle a little bit of cheese on the other long sides, allowing some of the cheese to fall onto the plate. Repeat this with another two crackers, and microwave for 5-10 seconds until gooey and bubbling. Once melted, allow the cheese to cool for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until the cheese is still pliable, but not liquid. Then lift each set of two crackers off of the tray, and press together to close the cheese-filled gap, and create a 90 degree angle with the two crackers. Repeat with the other set of two crackers, and then place these on top of each set of crackers from step 1, with the supporting, bridge-like cracker running parallel to these crackers. This will create a roof-like shape. Place in the fridge until completely set.

《Garage》

1. Using the same method of construction as in the Foundation and Walls section, sprinkle cheese onto both short ends of four Ryvita crackers, microwave for 5-10 seconds, and press the edges together to form a square box. Support with your hands until the cheese sets enough to stay upright, and then place in the fridge to fully set.

《Doors》

1. Sprinkle cheese onto one full side of three soda crackers, and melt in the microwave for 5-10 seconds until gooey and bubbly. Place one square onto one long side of the main cottage, and two crackers side by side onto one side of the garage, as the garage door.

Allow this entire structure to set in the fridge until the cheese is fully set and firm, about 20 minutes.

《Bread Bowl》

1. Slice off the top of a small bun of bread, and then remove the soft bread inside, creating a bowl shape. Cut the bread from the inside into bite-size pieces. Fill the bread bowl with any dip, sauce or relish of your choice.

《Arranging the Board》

1. Once the foundation of the house has fully set, arrange the long rectangular base on a wooden chopping board, and place the square garage on one side. Arrange a variety of cheeses inside the rectangular house, and place the roof on top, creating a closed box for the cheese. Place sliced vegetables (crudités) directly inside the garage, or in a smaller dish placed inside the garage. Arrange the nuts around the perimeter of the house, and the fruit and bread bowl on the remaining space on the chopping board.

Note: Cheese is best when left at room temperature for at least an hour before serving, so I would recommend keeping the house in the fridge, and filling it up with the room-temperature cheese when you are ready to serve it. This house can easily stand at room temperature for the duration of a dinner party, however if you notice the cheese beginning to soften too quickly, simply place it back into the fridge or freezer for 5-10 minutes.
